Open Calls Network: Space for Climate Neutral and Smart Cities

This summer the Netherlands Space Office together with Groundstation.SPACE launched the Open Calls Network. As part of the network we are presenting pre-selected Horizon Europe and other funding calls that are relevant for space and space data applications. The Open Calls Network also consists of a dedicated LinkedIn page, as well as a series of webinars.

In the first edition we focused on funding opportunities that are already open or about to open soon, around opportunities related to Climate Neutral and Smart Cities.

“Climate Neutral and Smart Cities” webinar

This June we held the first webinar from the Open Calls Network webinar series. During this online event participants met industry speakers, as well as took part in 1-minute pitch session. The platform for networking has been also provided, which allowed participants to find potential consortium partners.

One of the webinar speakers Ron Valk (CGI Nederland) talked about urban planning, living environment, as well as heatstress.

Smart city expert Otto Fabius from Sobolt deliver his presentation at “Climate Neutral and Smart Cities” webinar.

Andrei Bocin-Dumitriu (dotSpace foundation) did the overview of funding opportunities that are already open or about to open soon, around opportunities related to Climate Neutral and Smart Cities.

Open Call Reference: HORIZON-CL3-2022-INFRA-01-01

Description:

Cities are undergoing a rapid transformation most notably due to their digitisation. Besides this, the need for solutions to make them more sustainable and environmentally friendly has been addressed in many research projects, mainly from the perspective of climate adaptation. In this regard, nature-based solutions combined with local knowledge offer a potential also for security research on infrastructures.

Topics:

  • Integrated Nature-based solutions for the protection of infrastructure and existing integrated risk management plans for cities and urban areas
  • Adaptation and mitigation strategies for infrastructure protection applied by local authorities and operators
  • Resilience of local infrastructures enhanced by integrating local knowledge from population and historical documents
  • Novel construction materials and solutions resulting in more durable and damage resistant infrastructure
  • Full potential of Nature-based Solutions exploited by local authorities and operators to mitigate the risks related to multiple hazards manifesting at the same time

Opening date: 29.06.2022
Closing date: 23.11.2022

Horizon Europe Callout: Autonomous systems used for infrastructure protection

Open Call Reference: HORIZON-CL3-2022-INFRA-01-02

Description:

Time is critical to prepare and react to disruptions of infrastructures. Faster and coordinated interventions can significantly reduce the impact, avoid negative cascading effects or in the best case prevent disruptions. The increasing interconnectivity of infrastructures has also led to bigger complexity in regards to the detection and response to incidents and certain technologies can be misused to conduct attacks or targeted disruptions of infrastructures.

Topics:

-Autonomous surveillance, detection, and fast and coordinated response based on updated integrated contingency plans
-Long term deployment of autonomous solutions for the decontamination of large scale infrastructure in case of the release of CBRN-materials
-Long term deployment of autonomous solutions/systems/devices to detect CBRN threats in a fast, secure, and forensic way
-Consideration of system performance, interdependencies, new failure modes and conditions that need to be in place for this work as intended
-Concepts for the use of advanced materials, smart technologies and built-in monitoring and repair capabilities to reduce the destructive potential of natural disasters and (terrorist) attacks on infrastructures

Opening date: 29.06.2022
Closing date: 23.11.2022
