The 5 Key European Space Events of 2022

This week between Christmas and New Year is a good week to look back at the space year 2022, before we start planning for next year. At Groundstation.Space we had a great year with many events and many new opportunities on the edge of space and application areas for our clients.

So, looking back, what were the most influential space events in Europe in 2022 from our perspective? And with most of these events being organised every year or every two years, this is a good indicator of what events you cannot miss in 2023!

In chronological order:

Living Planet Symposium 2022

The Living Planet Sympsosium (LPS) was held in Bonn, Germany, from 23 to 27 May 2022. This tri-annual event brought together 5,000 Earth Observation specialists and data users to discuss the present and future of remote sensing in Europe. Organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), LPS has evolved into the world’s largest Earth Observation conference.

The symposium focused on how Earth observation contributes to science and society, and how disruptive technologies and actors are changing the traditional Earth observation landscape, which is also creating new opportunities for public and private sector interactions.

We are looking forward to the Living Planet Symposium 2025!

The EXPANDEO and FIRE Forum 2022 joint event took place on the 14th and 15th of June 2022 at the International Auditorium in Brussels and online. Key representatives from user communities, Earth Observation (EO) service providers and institutional actors attended this two-day event to discuss the ‘now and tomorrow’ of Earth Observation in Europe.

The first day was dedicated to the FIRE Forum, which targets EO uptake in six key industries –agriculture, wind energy, infrastructure, marine, raw materials and urban development. This was followed by an intensive day composed of seven panels, bringing together 37 speakers and moderators to discuss a various range of cross-cutting topics, including research and development trends, policy, capacity building, market development, and technological infrastructure enabling EO. The second day of EXPANDEO continued with ‘Green Deal Dialogue’ sessions discussing how to establish a dialogue with the policy process. The event also included the EARSC Awards 2022 ceremony.

Please mark your diary now for EXPANDEO 2023, held 13 and 14 June 2023!

EU Space Week 2022

The European Space Week is the annual conference of the European Union space programme, until now held in a different EU city every year. With the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) taking responsibility of all EU space programmes, this year the conference was held at EUSPA home city Prague, from 3 to 6 October 2022.

The four-day programme started with the traditional highly interactive ‘user consultation sessions’, where user groups of Copernicus, Galileo, and EGNOS services, covering several application areas, come together to discuss what works and what needs improvement. The recommendations from these user groups are then presented to the plenary conference a few days later.

During EU Space Week the plans for the next year are presented, including opportunities for businesses in Horizon Europe and other funding schemes, as well as updates to Copernicus and Galileo services, like new planned missions and of course topics like cybersecurity and access to space. A new topic at EU Space Week was a special session on Space for the Metaverse, opening up a completely new application area for space data!

Keep your calendars ready for the announcement of EU Space Week 2023!
