Horizon Europe Opportunities for EGNSS
Join the webinar on opportunities in Horizon Europe for Galileo and EGNOS, organised for the Netherlands Space Office (NSO), this Thursday 7 October 2021!
Funding calls for the space sector
In the webinar we will highlight a selection of Horizon Europe calls that will require EGNSS data from Galileo and EGNOS as part of the solution. These and other selected space calls in Horizon Europe have been collected in the new Open Calls Portal on this website, which is freely accessible to anyone interested.
The funding calls that are collected in the portal include the new Horizon Europe calls, but also calls from other sources, like the European Development Fund (EDF) and Digital Europe. Initially, the calls in the portal cover potential space applications in sectors like health, civil security, climate, energy, mobility, and bioeconomy, with more sectors being added over time.
The open calls portal offers great opportunities for a wide variety of space organisations, including those specialising in space, Earth observation, remote sensing, and satellite navigation technology and applications.
Prepare Yourself: Join our information webinars!
This October and November the Netherlands Space Office and dotSPACE organise a new series of webinars, in which we will highlight some of the best calls for the Dutch and European space sector. Please join these webinars to learn more about these great (new) business opportunities, to find potential consortium partners and find out about the dotSPACE services for writing successful proposals!
First webinar: 7 October 2021
The first of these webinars was on 7 October 2021, from 16:00 to 17:00 CET.
This webinar will focus on the opportunities of satellite navigation based on Galileo and EGNOS. We will specifically zoom in on collaboration opportunities between Dutch and European space organisations.

EGNSS: Galileo and EGNOS
Think that GNSS is just about your in-car navigation system? Think again! There are lots of application areas of EGNSS (European Global Navigation Satellite System) and its two main components: Galileo and EGNOS. Some of the key application segments include:
Agriculture
The costs associated with agriculture are on the rise and environmental demands are gaining ground by the day, meaning efficient and sustainable farming solutions are needed more than ever. EGNOS offers an affordable solution to move towards precision agriculture. In doing so, it enhances precision, eliminates waste, saves time, reduces fatigue, optimises the use of equipment (thus extending its lifetime) and increases crop yields.
Aviation
Aviation is the key market segment for European GNSS. In fact, EGNOS was designed for aviation. In brief, GNSS programmes like EGNOS have revolutionized the way we fly. It has created more access to small airports, increased safety and facilitated business across Europe. Across the commercial, regional, general and business aviation sectors and from airports to OEMs and the end user – everyone is benefitting from EGNOS.
Location Based Services (LBS)
Almost 3 billion mobile applications currently in use rely on positioning information. European GNSS applications are supported by several categories of devices, mainly smartphones and tablets, but also specific equipment such as tracking devices, digital cameras, portable computers and fitness gear.
Mapping & Surveying
European GNSS provides an efficient technology for mapping and is widely used by such organisations as utility companies as well as regional and local authorities. EGNOS can contribute in growing the use of GNSS in real time mapping solutions by providing free accuracy that is widely available. And did we mention it’s free? Today, most new GNSS devices are EGNOS-enabled, premitting real-time positioning and covering the majority of Europe.
Maritime
European GNSS, and specifically EGNOS, contributes substantially to the maritime sector. All passenger ships and cargo ships larger than 500 gross tonnage are regulated and rely heavily on GNSS for navigation. What’s more, GNSS systems for maritime navigation are widespread across commercial and recreational vessels, both overseas and in high traffic areas. GNSS is also used to ensure safe navigation in inland waterways (rivers, canals, lakes and estuaries).
Rail
Aside from the more well-known facts such as passenger information, European GNSS serves the rail sector in various other ways. From asset management to High and Low Density Command & Control Systems, the amount of initiatives in the world shows the consideration given to Rail and GNSS developments. GNSS enabled signalling applications provide increased safety and reduce costs of infrastructure management and operations compared to legacy signalling solutions.
Road
Mobility is an important part of everyone’s daily lives. European GNSS, including EGNOS, is making everyone’s life on the road easier by significantly reducing congestion and, consequently, CO2 pollution, improving the efficiency of road transportation through navigation, fleet management opportunities and satellite road traffic monitoring.
Timing & Synchronisation (T&S)
GNSS can be used to provide both timing and synchronisation. On the timing side, GNSS provides direct and accurate access to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). On the other hand, synchronisation between receivers at different locations can be established and maintained using GNSS reference time. As a result of these uses, many Telecom and Energy networks now rely on GNSS for synchronization operations, while financial institutions use GNSS to timestamp transactions.
