The second webinar in the CASSINI Hackathon “Space for Water” pre-event series focuses on the challenge of tracking and preventing water pollution.
Water pollution remains a major environmental issue affecting rivers, coastal zones, and ecosystems. Satellite observations and environmental data increasingly support monitoring efforts by helping identify pollution patterns, track changes over time, and support decision-making.
During this session, experts will introduce key challenges related to pollution monitoring and discuss how space-based data and analytics can contribute to protecting water resources.
Confirmed speaker:
- Luca Brugaletta, Scientific Software Engineer at S[&]T. Luca’s presentation will introduce the MestMonitor project, where high-resolution satellite imagery is used to assess water pollution risks in the Geul River. It will show how satellite data, on-site observations, and machine learning can be combined into a monitoring workflow that supports detection and prevention.
- Dakshin Victor John, Researcher at NVWA, working at the intersection of AI, ecology, and fisheries management.
- Lianne Wilmink, Senior Information Management Adviser at Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management
- Mattijs Erberveld, Innovation Adviser for Space & Sustainability at Rijkswaterstaat
During the webinar, participants can ask questions, present early hackathon ideas in short one-minute pitches, and take part in a round-table discussion.
