Ecoview 2025: A Global Remote Sensing Competition for Young Climate Scientists

Ecoview 2025: A Global Remote Sensing Competition for Young Climate Scientists

The GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory of the National Centre “Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine” – a member of the Copernicus Academy and Copernicus Ambassadors – invites students aged 14–18 to take part in the international Ecoview competition. Organised with the support of international partners, this unique initiative encourages young people to explore environmental challenges using satellite data and develop their own science projects.

Inspiring Climate Action Through Earth Observation

The competition is designed to promote climate literacy by helping students understand how remote sensing and satellite imagery can be used to analyse climate change and environmental transformations, particularly in their own home regions. By working with freely available Earth Observation data, students will learn valuable skills in data interpretation, environmental research, and science communication.

Competition Timeline

The competition is free and held entirely online in English, following a three-stage process:

  • Stage 1 – Submission (Open until 31 October 2025)
Participants register and submit a science project on an environmental topic of their choice, using remote sensing data. They are encouraged to select ecological issues, locations, research scales, and data sources that interest them most.

  • Stage 2 – Jury Evaluation (November 2025)
All submitted projects are evaluated by a panel of experts. Finalists are selected based on scientific merit, clarity, and effective use of satellite data.
  • Stage 3 – Online Presentations (5 December 2025)
Finalists will present their projects online via Zoom. Winners will be announced following a live jury session.

Participation Criteria

  • Projects must use remote sensing data.
  • Only individual entries are allowed (no team submissions).
  • Students must be between 14 and 18 years old.

Recognition and Prizes

  • All project submitters will receive a certificate of participation.
  • Finalists will receive custom merchandise.
  • Winners will receive diplomas and prizes from organisers and sponsors.

Resources and Training

To support participants, organisers provide a range of materials:

An introductory webinar will take place in September 2025 to walk students and supervisors through the guidelines, tools, and data sources used in the competition. Registration for the webinar and access to materials will be available via the competition website.
