Build Your Own Digital Twin of the Ocean: New ILIAD Academy Course Launching Soon

The ILIAD Academy will soon launch a new online course designed to guide users through the process of planning, developing and building a local Digital Twin of the Ocean. The course will introduce participants to each step involved in creating a Digital Twin, from working with data streams and models to applying the tools in real marine environments. Those interested can register for updates about the launch at the ILIAD Academy website.

The course has been developed by experts from the ILIAD project and provides a practical introduction to Europe’s evolving Digital Ocean ecosystem. Using a hands-on example focused on Marine Protected Areas, it explains the methods, technologies and workflows behind Digital Twins of the Ocean and how they can support informed decision making.

ILIAD builds on two decades of investment in policies and infrastructure for the blue economy. The project aims to establish interoperable, data-intensive and cost-effective Digital Twins of the Ocean that make full use of new data sources, high-performance computing and advanced digital technologies. Its approach brings together diverse datasets in a semantically rich and data-agnostic environment. This enables communication with both real-world systems and models and supports intuitive exploration of underlying information. Tools such as geo-visualisation, immersive visualisation and virtual or augmented reality allow users to analyse geospatial data in an interactive way.

These capabilities contribute to the objectives of the EU Green Deal and Digital Strategy and support the outcomes of the UN Ocean Decade and the Sustainable Development Goals. ILIAD follows a System of Systems approach that integrates existing European Earth observation and modelling infrastructures. To encourage further applications, the project partners have created the ILIAD Marketplace, where providers can offer apps, plug-ins, interfaces, raw data, citizen science data and value-added services based on ILIAD’s Digital Twins.

The ILIAD Academy team, including Bente Lilja Bye and Arne-Jørgen Berre, invites participants to sign up and be informed as soon as the course becomes available.
