“Restore our Ocean and Waters” webinar

Scientific Director of Water Insight, Dr Steef Peters provided an introduction about water quality from space, and how it can assist water authorities, bathing water managers, fish farmers and shellfish farmers. During the webinar, Dr Steef Peters showed examples from EU projects such as CoastObs, EOMORES, e-shape, TAPAS, and AQUA-USERS. In addition, the speaker shared his experience as coordinator of some of these projects.

Andrei Bocin-Dumitriu (dotSpace foundation) did the overview of funding opportunities that are already open or about to open soon, around opportunities related to Ocean and Waters.

Satellite IoT network expert Hub Urlings did his 1-minute pitch to introduce M2sat.

Horizon Europe Callout: Knowledge and innovative solutions in agriculture for water availability and quality

Open Call Reference: HORIZON-CL6-2023-ZEROPOLLUTION

Description:

Water availability and quality is one of the most pressing issues, affecting human health, limiting food production, limiting ecological services, and hindering economic growth. The uncertainty of water availability and its quality is a limiting factor of the resilience of agriculture to climate change and poses a problem in relation to unknown long-term effects on human health and ecosystems.

Topics:

  • Ensuring the quality and safety of irrigation waters
  • Enhanced understanding of current water, fertilizer and pesticide requirements in the agricultural sector
  • Protection of surface water and groundwater quality against harmful impacts of climate change
  • Advancing the understanding and prediction of the impacts on water availability and quality of climate change affecting agricultural water consumption patterns
  • Designing solutions, pathways and strategies for risk assessment, mitigation and adaptation to agricultural (irrigation) practices in the event of extreme weather pressures

Opening date: TBD

Horizon Europe Callout: Ocean and coastal waters carbon- and biodiversity-rich ecosystems and habitats in Europe and the Polar Regions

Open Call Reference: HORIZON-CL6-2023-CLIMATE

Description:

The ocean and coastal ecosystems and habitats play a significant role in the global carbon cycle, representing the largest long-term carbon sink. Over the past decade, research efforts to understand the ocean and blue carbon sinks and utilize their potential in climate mitigation frameworks has increased. There are remaining research gaps for advancing opportunities to incorporate potential ocean and blue carbon ecosystems into climate frameworks.

Topics:

  • Better understood and enhanced mitigation potential of ecosystems
  • Advanced understanding and science in support of adaptation and resilience of natural and managed marine and polar ecosystems
  • Climate change mitigation is fostered through the maintenance and enhancement of natural carbon sinks and stocks
  • Better understood impact of climate change on coastal zones and improved adaptive capacity of ocean systems
  • Uncovered mitigation opportunities of newly emerging European and polar blue carbon habitats
  • Reduced knowledge gaps for enabling the inclusion of these carbon- and biodiversity-rich marine habitats
  • Significant contributions made to the implementation of the European Green Deal

Opening date: TBD
