We are proud to announce the grand opening of the Wildlife Forensic Academy (WFA) on May 13th 2022 in South Africa!

International and South African guests will join us for an extremely exciting program of insightful talks and informative tours of the Experience Laboratory during our Summit from the 11th to the 15th of May.

What is the WFA?

The WFA is the world’s first platform for the mobilisation of wildlife forensic training and expertise: this grand opening is a great advance for the wildlife protection and nature conservation field.

The WFA is an innovation-driven platform: our inspiring learning environment consists of a 1000 m2 experience laboratory consisting of a broad range of realistic wildlife crime scenes, a furnished house, a street with vehicles, a laboratory, a courthouse, classrooms, and an observation room.

Why do we need the WFA?

Wildlife crime and illegal wildlife trade are significant and growing drivers of biodiversity loss and sources of illegal activity. Wildlife crime is also commonly not seen as an important crime and lacks credibility in many settings. Due to the lack of forensic evidence, many wildlife cases do not lead to a conviction and are thrown out of court. There is therefore an increasing need for forensic knowledge.

Before the investigation of the crime scene, there is a need for improving prediction and prevention of poaching by using data scene, algorithms, and satellite technology.

For whom is the WFA?

The Academy delivers training to wildlife rangers, park managers, police officers, prosecutors, and veterinarians. The Academy also offers study abroad programs to international students.
