The European EO services industry is a key partner of the EU flagship Copernicus programme. The industry is a supplier of data through the contributing missions, a supplier of contracted services and is a user of both data and services under the Free and Open data policy. The 2024 EARSC Industry Survey showed the importance of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) to the industry, as the second and third most used Copernicus service, respectively.
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts is the entity entrusted with the implementation of C3S and CAMS. Given the importance and potential of the two services for the EO services industry, in June 2022, EARSC and ECMWF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aimed to support the increased and continued uptake of CAMS and C3S by the EO services industry.
In keeping with the MoU, the second part of our two-part EOcafe series with the Copernicus Entrusted Entities, will focus on CAMS and C3S. Under the priorities of the current agreement with the European Commission, ECMWF focused on meeting user needs at European, national and local level, supporting policy design and implementation.
In order to carry out these user engagement and outreach activities, some key initiatives/tools have been the CAMS and C3S National Collaboration Programmmes and the Copernicus Thematic Hubs (Health & Energy). The first relates to user uptake at Member State level, mainly addressing national institutional user and stakeholders’ needs, whilst the thematic Hubs address stakeholder and user needs from specific thematic communities (e.g., Health, Energy, Coastal and Arctic). The EO services industry and private sector can benefit from, and be involved in, both of these initiatives.
Join us at our next EOcafe as our host Geoff Sawyer (EARSC Strategic Advisor and former Secretary General) welcomes Stijn Vermoote (Head of User Outreach and Engagement Section, ECMWF), Samuel Almond (Partnership and User Engagement Specialist, C3S) and Jonilda Kushta (Partnership and User Engagement Specialist, CAMS) to they discuss how the Copernicus Climate Change and Atmosphere Monitoring Service are engaging with different user communities and addressing their needs, as well as the opportunities for EO services industry in this context.
Some questions that could be addressed during this EOcafe include:
- What is the current status of CAMS and C3S user engagement and outreach activities?
- What can be done under the MoU to further support user uptake and involvement of the EO Services Industry?
- What is the National Collaboration Programme? What does it aim to achieve and how can the EO services industry get involved?
- What are the Copernicus Thematic Hubs? How can the EO services industry get involved and how can they benefit from the Hubs?
Registration: The webinar is open to all. Registration is free but compulsory.
Please note this is a virtual event!
EOcafe is part of a series of EARSC meetings that offer timely, relevant, and practical information on a broad variety of topics related to the EO sector. Join us every two weeks to discuss and network while enjoying a cup of coffee with friends.
