The shipping industry in the Baltic and Arctic regions is a vital artery of global trade, facing a multitude of challenges and opportunities. From navigating icy waters to ensuring environmental sustainability, stakeholders in the maritime sector encounter diverse demands. Earth Observation (EO) technology emerges as a transformative tool in addressing these challenges and optimising shipping activities in these strategically significant waterways.

In our upcoming EOcafe, we will explore the intersection of EO and the maritime industry, with a specific focus on the Baltic and Arctic regions. This EOcafe aims to elucidate how EO data and applications can enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in shipping operations within these dynamic environments.

The ESA Best Practices “EO4BAS” project aims to gather experts from both the EO and Baltic and Arctic shipping sectors to identify the key challenges and current/near future needs of the shipping sector, map existing EO products and solutions that could address those needs, as well as identify gaps in EO capabilities and propose a way forward.

Our host Geoff Sawyer (EARSC Strategic Advisor and former Secretary General) will be joined by Barbara Scarnato (Principal Consultant and Earth Observation Lead, DNV). Together, they will explore the outcomes of EO4BAS, the future EO capability needs and potential opportunities for the EO industry to get involved.

Tune in on Thursday, 30th May, to learn more about how Earth Observation can support Baltic and Artic shipping. Questions that could be addressed during this EOcafe include:

  • What is the current status and role of EO in Baltic and Arctic shipping? What are the challenges for the shipping industry in leveraging EO?
  • What solutions can EO provide? What is the added value of EO?
  • What are the challenges and barriers for EO companies to enter the market and integrate solutions into the specific business processes?
  • Are there any successful EO applications already developed/deployed? What was a good example or best practice?
  • What are the future needs for EO in Baltic and Arctic shipping? What main gaps were identified?
  • What measures/actions could be implemented to support the EO downstream services industry sector interact and support the shipping industry?
  • What are the next steps?

Registration: The webinar is open to all. Registration is free but compulsory.
